Gospel of Matthew 5:43-48 Reflection:
This week the church presents to us the Sermon on the Mount and similar writings from the Old Testament. She does this in order to compare and show us how the new law is only a fulfillment of the old.
In the first reading Moses tells the people that they will be God's people "but only if they follow his ways."
But in the new law there is a higher, more positive demand made of us: we must love even our enemy and pray for those who persecute us, if we are to be sons of the Father.
Jesus calls us to ever greater efforts, even to the effort to be perfect if we are to be like our Father in heaven.
The challenge of the Christian life is not an easy one!
