Today's Gospel is the famous story of the man possessed by a "legion" of devils. It is one of those stories that is hard to make sense of. I find that the best way I can understand a story like this is to personalize it.
There is a man with a load of demons in him and he is uncontrollable in his rage.
What are we like when the world gets in so much on us that we have a thousand voices going on in our head, telling us all sorts of nonsense about people, talking about us and laughing at us.
We are in a state of rage inside and no one can get through to us that all this insane thinking is driving us crazy and that most of it, if not all of it, is nonsense.
At a time like this we need to go and sit down and have a good relax to ourselves, to sit in front of the Blessed Sacrament and listen to what God has to say to us.
We also have to let these thoughts go and if others want to take them up and let the same thought destroy them, then so be it. If a group of people are angry about something, we may be the first in that group to have to let the anger go....and let the rest decide for themselves what they do. If they decide to go on in their anger til it destroys them, then so be it.
What other way would you describe a mad man with a head full on anger and resentment other than "possessed by a thousand demons?"
