READING I: 1 Kings 8:1-7, 9-13
RESPONSORIAL: Psalms 132:6-7, 8-1
GOSPEL: Mark 6:53-56
These martyrs, crucified in Japan between 1564 and 1566, were mostly Franciscan priests and brothers. There were also three Jesuits among them.
At our local Mass this morning a visiting priest made an interesting point; why do we honour martyrs? In this time of scandals, shame and change, he said, the martyrs remind us that our faith is worth holding on to even unto death. He compared this with the people who have stopped going to Mass because of the recent changes in translation. Worth thinking about, ain't it!
