Anthony is often called the "Father of Monks." Born about the year 260AD Anthony went to live as a hermit in the desert of Egypt after his parents died. He sold all his possessions and gave everything to the poor.
Anthony lived as very austere life in a cave and many legends grew up around him. These were made famous by St Athanasius who wrote the Life of St Anthony. Although many of the stories are now considered incredulous, Athanasius succeeded in portraying Anthony as a very holy man and one whom others who wanted to seek God should emulate.
Anthony was heroic in that he personally helped many who were exiled or fled during the persecution of Diocletian. He was also important in that he helped Athanasius in his fight against the Arian heresy. He is still looked upon as the ideal monk in that he lived a life of Holy Solitude and hardship. He died in 265AD at the age of 105.
