First Reading: 1 Samuel 15:16-23
Gospel of Mark 2:18-22 Reflection:
Our local priest gave us a very interesting take on today’s readings at Mass this morning and I have to say that I would never have thought of the readings in this light.
Briefly, the two readings from Samuel 15 and Mark 2 concern people preferring one thing over another. In the first reading Saul prefers sacrifice to God before obedience to God and Samuel points out that what the Lord loves most of all is obedience to his will.
In the Gospel, the Pharisees complain that the disciples of Jesus are not fasting in the same way as the disciples of John.
Our priest pointed out here that what was in question was priorities. In the first reading, Saul had got his priorities wrong; he put sacrifice to God before obedience to God.
However, in the Gospel the disciples of Jesus had the proper attitude; they were with Jesus and being with Jesus is more important that fasting. They had their priorities right; the presence of Jesus is to be preferred to anything else.
Our priest went on then to say that our presence at daily Mass showed that we wanted to be in the presence of Jesus and that we had our priorities right.
I thought it a nice few words that put these readings into a new perspective for me that I had never thought about before. There are many different aspects of my life that I could look and see where my priorities really lie.
