Born near Turin in 1815, John Bosco had a hard upbringing, living in poverty in a small farming community. Eventually he became a priest just as the Industrial Revolution was beginning in Italy. Seeing the effects the loss of the old way of life had on young men as they left the country and headed to the city, John Bosco founded a religious order specifically to educate and look after these young men. The Salesians, as they were called, still play a large part in Catholic education and are famous for their use of music while teaching and ministering. My wife and I recently attended a retreat given by a Salesian priest and we found him to be a man of considerable spiritual depth and definitely a great teacher.
