Gospel of Matthew 11:28-30 Reflection:
Today we continue the theme of the revelation of God. In the first reading Moses is told the name of God: I Am who Am.
God reveals his name and then his action; he is sending Moses to Egypt because he has heard the cry of the people. He will give them rest from their captivity, he shall take away their burden.
This was the Jewish image of God: a God who saves and looks after his people.
But then Jesus came along and claimed that he himself was the one who gave rest to those who labour and are heavily burdened. This was a new teaching. If it was right then God had become a man.
So Jesus is saying that what God did in the Old Testament he can do in himself: God has come among his people.
This is the revelation of who Jesus is and what he has come to do; to make known the Father who is hidden from all humanity.
