Gospel of Matthew 8:23-27 Reflection:
The most beautiful thing about today's gospel is the symbolism it contains.
For the Jewish people water was the symbol of life. Any person who lives in a desert knows how important water is for human survival.
The disciples and Jesus were in a boat, crossing water. Here, Jesus is the person who enables the disciples to cross over life (water) with no problem;
But a storm breaks out and the author of their contentment is asleep. There is a feeling of what is going on, Jesus should be protecting us!
In the middle of all the storms of life, Jesus is so much in control of life that he can just put his head down and sleep.
We, on the other hand, as shown by the disciples, tend to panic.
"Save us Lord. We are going to sink."
"Why are you so frightened?" says Jesus.
In this life, Jesus is in control. He is the author and guardian of all life and we should learn more and more over the years to leave all in his hands.
The boat won't go down when Jesus is about!
