Mary is one of those people about whom we know so little and yet there are so many legends about her. One thing we do know is that she was a disciple of the Lord and was with him on his journeys through the countryside.
Mary also stood at the foot of the cross with Mary, the mother of Jesus. Tradition has it that Mary was a prostitute and is the woman from whom seven demons had been driven out and that she was the woman who washed the feet of Jesus with her hair because much had been forgiven her.
There is no doubt that she loved the Lord with all her heart and this is shown in many images on the Stations of the Cross, which has Mary always sitting sorrowfully at the foot of the cross.
On Easter Sunday morning Mary is the first of the disciples to see the risen Lord. She takes him to be the gardener and asks where he has put the body. She does not know Jesus until he addresses her by her name, “Mary.”
It makes you think that Jesus had some special way of calling to her or speaking her name that she knew it when he said it.
Mary is the sinner come good; she is what each of us can be if we respond fully to the word of God. She stands like a beacon saying, ‘this is what a Christian can be like if they allow Jesus to heal them.’
What would we be like if we allowed Jesus to heal us in this way and responded fully to his love?
PRAYER TO SAINT MARY MAGDALENE
Saint Mary Magdalene,
woman of many sins, who by conversion
became the beloved of Jesus,
thank you for your witness
that Jesus forgives
through the miracle of love.
You, who already possess eternal happiness
in His glorious presence,
please intercede for me, so that some day
I may share in the same everlasting joy.
