2 Kings 22:8-13,23:1-3 Reflections:
When I read this reading this morning I was struck by one thing: that we in the West have returned to the Old Testament times. The writer is complaining that the people have turned away from God and followed the ways of the people in the lands that they have settled in.
‘And yet through all the prophets and all the seers the Lord has given Israel and Judah this warning’ and that was not to get involved with other Gods. But the people are stubborn and they had no faith in the Lord their God.
What is happening in the world today that we have never seen from the coming of Christ is a formal, deliberate and decisive decision by society’s leaders to ignore God in everything and to say to him that he is not wanted and does not matter.
But we are made to be in communion with God so this decision shall have effects on our culture and way of life; we are reverting to the old pre Christian days of empire where the strong prospered, the weak died and human life had no meaning. We have so many rights that each of us has none, we are so rich that all of us are poor and we are so smart that we can’t see God in the wonders of his glorious creation.
In the end these times shall pass, but that shall not be in our day. We have a very important job to do; we have to keep the light of the faith shining in a world that thinks we are stupid, we have to be pockets of Christian living in a world that laughs at us.
If we don’t, who shall carry the message and keep it alive!
