READING I: Deuteronomy 4:1, 5-9
RESPONSORIAL: Psalms 147:12-13, 15-16, 19-20
GOSPEL: Matthew 5:17-19
In the first reading today from the book of Deuteronomy, Moses announces the Law. This is the Law by which the people of Israel are meant to live until such times as the Messiah comes. But they misunderstand; some, like the Pharisees come to think their is nothing else but the Law, while others, the ordinary sinners like you and me, tend to pick and choose which bits we obey.
Jesus, on the other hand, is the fulfillment of the Law. The observance of God's natural law written on our hearts and for the Jews, the observance of the Law, prepare us to be open to who Jesus really is. We cannot see Jesus if we look at him with the eyes of the world but if we make our heart docile (easily teachable) by obeying God's law then when Jesus speaks in scripture and in our hearts we shall recognise and welcome him. This is the proper work of the Law, to make us ready to hear Jesus!
