Feast of Saint Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary
This is a memorable day for the Church. Today, as the Church remembers the humility and quiet strength of St Joseph, we are getting a new pope-a pope who seems to personify humility and simplicity.
In all ages, men have reflected on the virtues of St Joseph; his humility, obedience and faith. He believed when the angel appeared to him in a dream and although he could not possibly understand he walked on in faith.
I remember one evening hearing a priest speak of St Joseph and what he said in one sentence summed up all we need to know about this beloved saint:
"Think of St Joseph, a carpenter, going for his ten o'clock tea break. When he sat down at the table, on one side he had the Immaculate Conception, Mother of God and on the other side he had the Incarnation, Son of God."
Now that's a tea break!
Joseph was chosen to care for and look after the Father's two most precious things in this world, his Son and the mother of His Son.
Joseph carried out these tasks admirably. As Francis says in his homily today as I write this, Joseph is the protector of the Church, even in heaven he is still our protector.
The foster father of Jesus shall certainly care for his Church. St Joseph, pray for us.
