Feast of St Joseph,
Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary Reflection
In this day and age when the world is becoming more divided between the have's and have's not, it is good to remember that God can call anyone he wants to do a job for him. When God was looking over the world seeking someone to be the foster father of his son, he did not go for the rich and mighty as we would do today, he went for the most suitable person, a man who just happened to be a carpenter in a small village.
Imagine what the modern world would think of that. How could such a man be good enough for the job? But God sees where we don’t see. God sees the heart and he knows what stuff we are made off. Joseph, a man just like the rest of us, had an ear and a heart open to the word of God. We see this in the way that once he heard God in a dream he believed and acted in accordance with that belief.
Joseph is an example of something modern man does not understand, when God wants you to do something he gives you the grace to carry out that task. So if God wants you to be a parent he will give you the grace to be a parent. Or if he wants you to be a teacher he will give you the grace to be a teacher.
The problem in today’s world is that so many of us are driven by our own desires for money, recognition etc, that we miss the opportunity to receive grace of any kind. Then we are miserable in our work, because the work we are doing is the object of our desires and not in accordance with God’s will for us. God did not make us to be unhappy, he made us to enjoy work and life.
So when we are not enjoying work etc, perhaps we need to ask ourselves a few questions, mainly ... am I doing God's will?
