Gospel of Luke 15:1-3, 11-32 Reflection:
Today we have the Parable of the Prodigal Son. At its heart this is only a story of family relationships lifted on to a divine plain by Jesus. The reason we can all identify with this story is because we can all see ourselves in each of the people at different times.
If we are parents we are constantly forgiving our children. If we are sons or daughters we are constantly letting our parents down. And if we are human we are often filled with the jealousy and anger of the elder brother.
Jesus shows great understanding of the human family and the human condition. Sometimes we forget that he was truly human, a real human person just like the rest of us. He was subject to the same fears, worries and stress as the rest of us.
The prodigal family is the family we all belong to, it is our earthly. And aren't we so lucky to be in the middle of such a family where forgiveness is always on offer.
