Gospel of John 8:51-59 Reflection:
This is the piece of scripture where Jesus states clearly that he is the Son of God and therefore his equal.
Jesus tells the pharisees that anyone who keeps his word shall never see death. The Jews retort that even Abraham and the prophets died. By saying this Jesus is implying that he is greater than Abraham and has the authority to give life without end to anyone.
Then Jesus goes on to say that he knows God and that Abraham rejoiced that he (Abraham) would see the triumph of Jesus.
Then finally Jesus says something that no Jew, even to this day, would say; he says that his name is "Yahweh".
This word, which is so sacred, is God's name. It translates as "I am who am" and when Jesus says this he is saying that his name is the same as God's.
It is for this that the Pharisees decide to kill him: Jesus says simply that he is God in their midst and they cannot cope with this.
