Gospel of John 11:45-56 Reflection:
The plot against Jesus thickens but John's use of words as he describes what is going on is interesting. The chief priests and pharisees acknowledge that Jesus is "working all these signs." The piece of scripture we read today is the part from just after Jesus has raised Lazarus from the dead; this was Jesus' greatest sign, raising from the dead a man who had lain in the tomb for four days. And the pharisees were present to see this happen.
But the chief priests say that the Romans shall come and destroy the Temple if Jesus causes a rebellion and then they say it is better for one man to die than for the nation to be destroyed.
So the chief priests and pharisees acknowledge Jesus' signs. They decide after seeing his great sign of raising Lazarus, to kill him.
They must have had incredible hatred for Jesus. We know from history that this hatred is always there. It shows itself in persecutions and ignorance.
And it shows itself today in the culture of death and the mocking of God that is so widespread in our world.
In every generation there are people who choose to obey God and those who choose to hate him. What choice do I make today?
