wake-up call through awareness
what choice do you make?
Gospel of John 13:21-33,36-38 Reflection:
This gospel is about human weakness. Judas is about to betray the Lord and Jesus predicts that Simon is going to deny three times that he knows Jesus. It is not a nice gospel particularly for us who have become aware of our sins.
Have you ever noticed how easy it is to judge other people harshly, how it is so easy to fall into the mode of looking down on people?
Judas did what so many people have done and shall always do, he sold himself, not Jesus, for thirty pieces of silver.
Peter, like all of us, was a weak, frightened man. He still had not received the Holy Spirit so he had no real knowledge of what was going on and he had no spiritual power to fall back on.
But Peter repented; he cried bitter tears. Judas gave way to despair. That is the big difference between to two. For us the lessons are not to despair and not to judge too harshly.
Had you been Peter in the middle of a hostile crowd, alone and leaderless, far from home and feeling lost, what would you have done?
When you think of it, Peter was brave enough to stay around for a few days. Most of us would have been back in Galilee before the cock crowed three times!
