that I cast out devils,
then know that the kingdom
of God has overtaken you.'
Gospel of Luke 11:14-23 Reflection:
Jesus is casting out devils and the Pharisees say that it is through the power of the devil that he casts out devils. There is no pleasing some people.
Nowadays the smart people would say that there are no devils to cast out and that everything can be explained by science. Love, goodness, charity and concern for our fellow humans are nothing more than freak accidents of nature or evolutionary devices to give us an advantage.
In every age and every generation there seems to be a group of people who simply will not believe in God; they refuse to believe.
And this point is important, people refuse to believe.
If a person is living a life that is wrong in the sight of God the easiest way to justify such a life is to say that there is no God.
The Pharisees had a good thing going; they ruled the roost. They imposed laws on the people, interpreted God's law in a way that suited themselves and they did not want their little kingdom challenged by some wandering rabbi from Nazareth.
Can you think of any parallels today?
