Today Jesus warns us about the cost of following him; "the world will hate you because it first hated me." By "the world" scripture always means the world of flesh and sin, those people who wish to exclude God from all decisions and follow their own desires no matter what. This is basic human nature, to choose to follow God and thus have him as the authority in your life or to follow our own desires and ignore God.
The strength of the hatred of secularists towards God and people who follow him is hard to imagine. But Jesus promises us that no matter what happens he shall be with us. It is a promise that we experience as true; Jesus is Lord and no matter what the world says or does this fact can never be changed. Following Jesus is its own reward. The world can never know this because every individual in worldly affairs wants to follow their own path, not God's.
