Gospel of John 16:16-20 Reflection:
This reading seems to foretell the passion and death of Christ but in another sense it speaks of the Ascension, which we in Ireland will celebrate on Sunday!
"In a short while you will no longer see me, and then a short time later you will see me again." We immediately think of Holy Thursday when Jesus said these words but now we are at the Ascension. Jesus is leaving for a while but after Pentecost, 10 days later, he shall be with us again in a new way; his sacramental presence. He is here now in the Eucharist, Confessions, etc. Only now we see him with the eyes of faith. For the Catholic, the sacraments are the manner in which Jesus is present in the world. Jesus is still with us!
