A disciple of St Hilary, Martin was born in AD 316 in the town of Pannonia. After being baptized, he gave up his life as a soldier and entered a monastery. However, on the death of Hilary he was ordained and made bishop of Tours.
Because of his tenderness in caring for his flock, the gospel chosen for Martin's feast is Matthew 25:31-40. This is the story of the last judgement and the assigning of souls to heaven or hell. The story of the saint's death says that Satan appeared to him on his deathbed and Martin rebuked him saying, "Blooded beast, what are you doing here, you shall find nothing of you here. I go to the arms of Abraham" Wouldn't it be nice to die with such faith in God! Feast of St Martin of Tours.
