All the popes except one up to AD250 died as martyrs. Clement reigned from about AD95-105 and was a friend of both St Peter and Paul. He wrote a famous letter to the Corinthians. Feast of St Clement of Rome. Pope and martyr.
There is, however, one important point about Clement which still reverberates today; a dispute broke out in one of the local churches and even though St John the Evangelist was still alive, the matter was put to Clement for resolution. This shows that even as early as AD100 Rome was seen as the teaching authority in the church. There is a Clement mentioned in Philippians 4:3 and many scholars hold that this is Clement of Rome.
