Ephesians 3:14-21 Reflection:
Paul says a lovely prayer for us today: “Out of his infinite glory, may he give you the power through his Spirit for your hidden self to grow strong…”
Our hidden self is our soul or spirit. Over the years as Christians we are supposed to grow strong in soul, knowing what is right and wrong and knowing what to do that is in accord with God’s will. The life of the Christian is always one of growing: growing in understanding, knowledge, wisdom and love. In fact all areas of our life that are positive should constantly be coming that little bit nearer to God.
In today’s world, the growth which comes from real commitment to God and to his laws, is frowned upon. We are in constant seeking of what is ‘handy’ for us, the quick fix and the instant gratification.
This is not the Christian way. The Christian life is a lifelong process of carrying the daily cross which is common to all men. And for most of us the daily cross that we carry is our humanity with all its wee needs and foibles, such as jealousy, fear, resentment and the like.
Accepting these defects as part of ourselves and asking God to help us live in a way that alleviates their effects is a real part of the Christian life. Growing strong, day by day, is slow, hard but very rewarding work.
