Gospel of Luke 12:49-53 Reflection:
Jesus uses dramatic language to illustrate a point in the gospel today; “I have come to bring fire to the earth and how I wish it were blazing already.”
He is saying that he has a job to do and that he wants to get it over with. Like a general on the day of battle Jesus is saying, let’s bring this thing to a head.
Then he describes the effects of his mission on people. Again he uses the image of the destruction of a family to show his effect on people.
Jesus is really saying that the Christian life is serious; it must be a deliberate choice no matter what the consequences and sometimes these shall have big repercussions on our lives.
There have been many cases where a person’s decision for Christ has split a family. Often you hear of young men choosing a life for Christ and the family being against it.
During our Christian journey there shall be many times when we shall be called to make choices for Jesus that others will not like. We should be prepared for this and we also believe that in the long term those choices that are made for Jesus are the best.
But the unfortunate reality is that sometimes we have to leave people and the past behind.
