Jonah 3:1-10 Reflection:
Today’s first reading contains one of my favourite lines of scripture, the very first verse of the book of Jonah. The verse states, “The word of the Lord was addressed to Jonah: Up, he said, go to Nineveh.”
I love the bluntness with which God speaks to Jonah. We are not told if Jonah was a prophet before hand, or if he was an ordinary man working at his job and going about his business, but all of a sudden God calls him and gives him a job to do.
But we are told that even though he was given the briefest of orders ‘Jonah set out in obedience to the Lord.’
Does God speak to us like this, suddenly calling on us to do something without the least bit of notice?
He may not call us to something great like going to convert a city but perhaps he calls us to do little things like help a friend or say the right word to the right person.
When they heard the word of God the people of Nineveh repented.
What would have happened if Jonah had said to the Lord that he was too busy, that there was something good on TV or that he had important business somewhere else?
I shiver to think how many times in my life I have let people down because I was too preoccupied with my own life to listen to how God was calling me to help others.
Doesn’t bear thinking about, does it!
