We Irish like to look at people and take them down a peg. One of our favorite put downs is "he doesn't practice what he preaches!" In today's gospel Jesus addresses this very issue especially in relation to the Pharisees. He tells the people to do what they say but not as they do, remarking that they like to be seen in the proper places, at the right functions and in the front of the synogogues. It seems people don't change. We have the same problem with priests today. Sometimes we see them take a drink, dance, laugh, etc. and we think to ourselves "why should we do as these men say?" The point here is that God's law and what is right and wrong does not change because of who is telling you about it. If a thief says it is wrong to steal, it is still wrong to steal. So it is with God's law. If the preacher does not live up to what he says it does not give us the right to do as we want. Another good excuse gone!
