The prayer of blessing is man's response to God's gifts: we bless the Almighty who first blesses us and fills us with his gifts. (552)
You might not believe it but the above quote is from the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
I never thought much about the meaning of the word 'blessing'. I thought I knew until I came across the above definition. A blessing is our response to God's gifts. A deeper knowledge of blessing came into my understanding.
To respond to God's gifts in our lives...this isn't asking for just good things and no pain to be experienced. A blessing asks that we, the person or people, might respond to God's gifts. It leaves the 'how' and in what circumstances to God.
So when we bless our sons, daughters, friends, we are really asking that they respond to God's gifts in their lives. When the priest at Mass blesses us, he is asking that we might respond to God's gifts in our lives.
So bless others and may you be blessed!
