Des and I shared an inability to cope with life on life's terms. This led to addictions which we overcame with the help of a spiritual programme. Throughout the years, we shared many deep and emotional hurts that lay far down in our psyche. Ours was a friendship you find once or twice in a lifetime. Although at the beginning of our friendship I was supposed to be helping him, over time we grew to a stage where we were mutual support for each other. As scripture says about Jesus, "he grew in wisdom and stature," and Des passed much of his wisdom on to others.
Last September when I got married to my wife,I invited Des to be our Best Man. I am so glad now that I did so. I suppose it was his last big day out. His speech at the reception was brilliant. He did me proud. Why did I ask him to be best man? Simply because he was the best man I have ever met! May he rest in peace.
